Mace spice is the lace-like scarlet membrane that surrounds the exterior of the nutmeg seed and is derived from the tropical nutmeg tree, also known as Myristica fragrans. When ripe, the fruit breaks apart to show the seed and aril and falls off the tree. Harvesting involves gently removing the aril from the exterior, flattening it, and letting it cure for up to two weeks. This is how mace is made. The more well-known member of Mace's family, nutmeg, is the seed within. Similar to nutmeg, mace is used as a dried powdered powder as well as in entire dried bits. Visit:
